I am a Telecommunications and Informatics Engineering graduate from Instituto Superior Técnico. During my bachelor's degree, I developed strong foundations in computer science and software engineering. Later in my Master's program, I deepened my expertise in computer networks, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. My thesis research applies deep learning to maritime vessel data for fishing activity classification. I've developed and implemented two neural network architectures (LSTM-FCN and 1D-CNN) that analyze vessel movement patterns from AIS/VMS tracking data to identify fishing activities and classify fishing gear types. These models achieved high accuracy values on real-world fishing vessel data provided by the Portuguese Navy, demonstrating practical applications for fisheries management and marine conservation. I am currently working at Grupo Visabeira's I&D division as a Data Scientist, where I contribute to AI-driven projects.

Licenciado em Engenharia Mecânica pelo Instituto Politécnico de Viseu, concluiu a componente curricular (pós-graduação) do Mestrado em Engenharia Mecânica e Gestão Industrial no Instituto Politécnico de Viseu, em colaboração com a Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto e a componente curricular (pós-graduação) do Mestrado em Engenharia e Design de Produto na Universidade de Aveiro. Entre 2017 e 2019, dedicou-se à investigação académica no âmbito do projeto Learnin’s Creatin’ (CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-023394). O seu percurso científico inclui a participação em eventos de divulgação, como a Noite Europeia dos Investigadores e a integração na comissão organizadora da International Conference on Active Learning and Education (ICALE 2018). Complementou a sua formação com os cursos de Experimentation for Improvement (McMaster University) e Project Management Professional (PMP)® (Cert Prep) pelo PMI. No setor privado, exerceu funções como técnico de planeamento industrial na Métrica Primordial (2019–2021) antes de transitar para a Purever Industrial Solutions. Aí, consolidou o seu percurso na área de I&D, assumindo no início de 2026 as funções de Group R&D Engineer, liderando o departamento de inovação e desenvolvimento de novos produtos. O seu percurso é também marcado por um forte espírito de associativismo e proatividade. Foi presidente do Núcleo de Alunos do Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e Gestão Industrial do IPV, vogal do Conselho Fiscal da Associação de Estudantes da ESTGV, vogal da Direção da Associação Académica de Viseu e fundador da Associação de Antigos Alunos de Engenharia Mecânica e Gestão Industrial do IPV.

Vitor Pires is an Automation and Robotics Technician at DNC Técnica, in Leiria, a position he has held since May 2018, where he works on the development of industrial automation projects. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, where he also took part in the Fado de Coimbra activities. Before joining DNC Técnica, he built a solid technical foundation over several years: between 2011 and 2013 he worked as an Independent Worker and Technician at ISICOM, and between 2013 and 2018 he served as an Electromechanical Technician at Emílio de Azevedo Campos SA, between Lisbon and Porto. This background gave him broad experience in electromechanics, which now underpins his specialization in industrial automation and robotics.
